Maximum the Hormone - maximum the hormone English lyrics

In 2011, MTH hadn't released any new music, but all of a sudden, they released a video of a J-pop/J-happy emo reggae song. This is a genre that has gotten stupidly popular in Japan, and for a moment it looked like MTH had gone down the popular road.

Then they released the full version of the video, which you should see for yourself. MTH gives a pretty clear idea of their opinion towards this "mainstream" ideal.

They announced their first greatest hits album. For years 2011-2011. So yeah, it wasn't actually a greatest hits records, but new songs. Actually it was a single. And not just a single, but a triple A-side single. No B-sides, three songs all featured on the single. I bought the single, it was pretty awesome.

Not only was it packaged in the "Greatest Hits" sleeve, but the plastic case inside had three interchangeable front cover inserts for each of the three songs.

Appropriately for their "Greatest Hits", the first song on the single is self-titled: "maximum the hormone". It is in a sense a theme song for them. But it's not. It goes over a lot of basic info about the band, with some shout-outs to fans and their record label.

I was recently asked if my lyrics could be used in a music video fansub project! This is the first one. You can download the video at the site below that uses my translated lyrics! It includes the happy-pop-reggae song.

And the official video upload on Youtube

Here is my translation below, with some explanations in brackets. This was one of the easier songs to understand, some of it anyways.

[OK, so, "Hormone" in Japanese refers to a popular type of meat that is very popular at Korean-style BBQ restaurants in Japan. "Hormone" is basically the entrails/gizzards. Intestines, stomach, and all the parts that are "normally" thrown out. And MTH loves to eat them. (I like it myself too, actually)]

[This means mosh and circle pit, duh! There's generally a lot of moshing at MTH shows, which are pretty crazy. I recommend you look for the video where everyone in the audience is wearing a motorcycle helmet.]

  1. Great translation!
I had an idea that the song was mainly about them, food and their record label, so this clarified it, thank you very much!
But what does Ryu mean by "filthy Americans"? Was he referencing "Koi no Sweet Kuso Meriken"?
That would be a good song to translate as well, just a suggestion!
    Keep up the good work!
    Cheers!

    1. Thanks!
That's a great idea! That's a song I never really got around to figuring out the meaning, and I was wondering too. MTH albums usually have a little explanation in the lyrics booklet and that's one album I didn't buy. Crap, now I wanna buy it!

One commenter online though, said that he is actually referring to "Meriken-ko" which is another name for flour, which was called that when it was imported to Japan by Americans. I think he probably wanted to talk about it but make it sound edgy by making it sound like "fucking Americans!" as a joke.

Just going off on a tangent, imagining why Ryo-kun would write a song about loving flour, maybe it's a joke about doing drugs? White powder? Ryo-kun makes a lot of jokes about drugs. For example, he likes getting high by smelling old video game cartridges, weird stuff like that lol.

  5. Looks like they will show their new music on Nico Nico Douga this weekend! It's free but you have to register an account in the Japanese site.

From June 1 10 PM to June 2 10 PM they air old videos and talk live, and 30 minutes before the end they air the new music.

  6. Yeah, I managed to watch most of the live stream and saw the new video yesterday (don't know if you got my post).
But maybe you should try translataling it since it has the lyrics to go along with the video.

    1. Yeah I could do that next. Hopefully I can find the video online, they kept rotating it to different URLs as sort of a game before taking it off the internet. New album goes on sale end of July. Maybe I will make the new songs my next project!

    私ひとつの備考があります。
    >ban kurowasu kuroobi gyokusai
    >番狂わす 黒帯玉砕
    「狂わす」の言葉は「くるわす」と読まれるべきです。「くろわす」ではありません。
    私ね日本人じゃないけれど、辞典によって「狂わす」の言葉は「狂わす」と読まれます。
    耳を貸して、ありがとうございます。

  14. Communication with the native-speaker might be a plus and a go to to a foreign country will bring you not only practice but joy and pleasure. But just before performing all the above-mentioned, you are to consider, what language you are going to learn proffessional translation. If you passionately want to learn Icelandic and know that there is no way of making use of it in practice, what’s the point in beginning to study it.
